Is it cold where you are? The Midwest is pretty chilly, but honestly it's been so unseasonably warm lately. Still! We've had a good dose of creeping fog and some plummeting temps, so it's not totally off track for December. That's neither here nor there, the point of this remains. The cold will be here sooner or later - and it'll probably make itself at home for a bit.
I've talked about this before (or at bare minimum tweeted about it), but one of the best things about this time of year is the yin / yang of cold / warm. What's better than defrosting after an invigorating, brisk, winter walk? Or facing the cold after downing a hot toddy?
In step with the spirit of the season, I've put together a list of my favorite cold + cozy records. They're not inherently seasonal (and definitely not Christmas music). But for what it's worth, I think they're ideal winter listening material.

1. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - The Boatman's Call
You're driving a ways out of town to a Christmas tree farm you found online. Hopping out of the car you find there's a hole in your left glove. As you walk the cold cuts through, needling its way past your layers. Scanning the fog-blurred horizon you wonder, "Why did I come here on my own?"
2. Low - Things We Lost In The Fire
Imagine you're laying on a frozen lake. You'd come out to see the sunset, but now that it has you've found yourself unable to move. Time's moving at a rate that you can practically feel the cold creep up from your extremities. But warm memories keep it at bay. The sun's coming back up eventually, right?
3. The Blue Nile - Hats
Listening to this record makes me feel like I've been riding a trolley in the rain, soaked trench coat and all. Misty-eyed looking out the window either at my own reflection or something I can't quite see for the dark.

1. Bedhead - Beheaded
You know when you're so totally, perfectly, completely warm and you don't want to move? Actually you might not even to physically be able to. Because these new flannel sheets paired with your favorite socks have by some sort of alchemy created a subtle, but perfect state of being.
2. Tom Waits - The Heart of Saturday Night
How long does it take an ice cube to melt?*
*Please note the ice cube's in a glass of whiskey being held near a fireplace.
3. Billie Holiday - Music For Torching
Oh pardon me, were you looking to stare wistfully out of a slightly frosted window? Hmm, you want to be able to slow dance to it too? Well it's a rare combination you're looking for, but we think we've got just the thing.
