It's been cold and rainy (or snowing) in Bloomington ever since the start of the new year. While beautiful as it's failing, fluffy, white snow becomes brown, gray sludge or tracts of ice compounded by passersby on the sidewalks. Needless to say it's hard to get out of the house sometimes!
Visit Bloomington, a local organization that keeps folks up to date on events, places to eat & more, puts together Instagram meetups every so often. Lucky for me, they had one planned for mid-January (peak slush point). This one was at Upland Brewery's Wood Shop. I can always count on Upland for a good pint, and a great bite to eat - but I hadn't been to their newly built Wood Shop 'til this meetup.
Sour beers are pretty much uncharted territory for me, but they're a growing niche market within the larger beer industry. The brewing process calls for a lot of creativity - how do you balance the acidity of pineapple? What compliments pawpaw (fondly referred to as "Indiana banana")? Upland gave us a tour and let us taste their popular sours as well as some unreleased ones. My personal favorite was a sour that blended plum + cardamom.

To avoid getting total cabin fever I've tried pushing myself to get out more, even if it's -1 outside. And one morning I did just that. As a southerner I'm still not totally used to seeing a frozen lake (despite living here for over three years). It was pretty surreal to be out taking photographs when no one else was around.
On the flip side I've sought out extra warmth in coffee shops, greenhouses and of course - my bed.
